Mass Protests Erupt in South Korea Following Ouster of President Yoon Suk-yeol

Seoul: Tens of thousands of South Koreans have flooded the streets in protest after the Constitutional Court unanimously removed President Yoon Suk-yeol from office, citing his failed attempt to impose martial law on December 3. The ruling has intensified political unrest in the country and triggered the requirement for a presidential election to be held by June.

The court’s decision, delivered on Friday, followed months of political tension marked by rising polarization and weekly rallies in Seoul. Under South Korea’s constitution, a new president must be elected within 60 days. Until then, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will serve as acting president.

Supporters of the ousted president gathered in central Seoul on Saturday, undeterred by the rain. Chanting slogans such as “Impeachment is invalid!” and “Cancel the snap election!” they accused the court of undermining the nation's democracy.

Yoon had argued his move toward martial law was necessary to combat “anti-state forces” and defend against perceived threats from North Korea. However, in a statement following the ruling, he accepted the outcome.

“It has been a tremendous honour to serve the Republic of Korea,” Yoon said. “I am sincerely thankful to all who supported me despite my flaws.”

While many South Koreans celebrated the verdict with joy and relief, Yoon's support base—including far-right groups, religious conservatives, and influential right-wing content creators—continued to rally behind him, often spreading conspiracy theories to bolster his image.

Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung has emerged as the favourite to win the upcoming election. Known for his more diplomatic stance on North Korea, Lee’s potential leadership is causing concern among Yoon’s followers.

“I fear this country is on the brink of collapse,” said 59-year-old Yoon supporter Park Jong-hwan. “It already feels like we’re slipping into socialism or even communism.”
